Micrococcus

(mi-kro-kok' -us). A genus of schizomycetous microorganisms, having spheric elements, isolated, in united in two's or in larger numbers, or disposed chaplets, or ma es of zooglea. Sometimes they are united in such a way as to resemble a bunch of grapes and are then called Staphylococci. When united in couples they are called Diplococci. If arranged in strings or chaplets they are called Streptococci. Certain species are pathogenic, others are chromogenic, others have a fermentative action, and some no discoverable function.
