Chant

(chant) [Fr., from chanter, to sing.] (Mus.) A kind of religious music, commonly used in the psalms and litanies of the church-service. They are of 3 kinds: the monody, sung as a solo; the antiphony, performed as a duet; and the choral, which is sung by the whole choir. The principal C. are the Ambrosian and the Greg or i an (q. v.)
