(Fr. chanter, to sing.) In Music, an ecclesiastical song usually adapted to the psalms and litanies. There have been several sorts, of which the first was the Ambrosian, invented by St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan. The Greg or i an chant, which was introduced by Pope Gregory, is still in use in the Roman church, and is the foundation of all that is grand and elevated in music. [s. 226]
