Chancel

[Fr. chancel, cancel, or canceau; Lat. can celli, dim. of cancer, a lattice; Gr king - klis. That part of a church where the altar or communion-table is placed; formerly enclosed with lattices, or cro -bars. It is sometimes separated from the nave, and other portions in which the congregation a embles, by a screen.
