CHANCEL

(Lat. can cell us.) In Architecture, the part of the choir of a church between the altar CHANCELLOR. and the lattices (cancelli) or balustrades that enclose it. This is the strict meaning; but in many cases the chancel extends much further into the church, the original divisions having been removed for the greater accommodation of the congregation. [s. 225]
