(0. c. 460 B.C.), one of the greatest Gk. philosophers; anticipated theory of matter (7.e.) matter is composed of atoms which are always in motion; held that all atoms were alike, only by arrangement and position could they form different objects, hence objects did not vary, but their varied appearances were due to our sensations.
