Document announcing the separation of the American colonies from England. It was moved in Congre June 7, 1776, that "the united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States." A committee of Jefferson and four others were appointed to prepare this declaration. It was unanimously adopted July 4 and signed Aug. 2. See MECKLENBURG.
