Warsaw

(wor's aw,) [Fr. Varsovie,] a handsome and flourishing city, C. of the Ru ian viceroyalty and of Washburne, the former kingdom of Poland, on the Vistula, in Ν. Lat. 52° 13', E. Lon. 21° 2'. It is the chief centre of Polish intellectual and commercial activity, and po e es an excellent university, re-established by the Ru ian govt. This place became the Polish cap., in succe ion to Cracow, in 1566, and in 1794 was taken and sacked by the Ru ians under Suwarrow, and reoccupied by them in 1831. Pop. 180,657.
