Sea

A term variously applied, viz‘: to a great expanse of salt water, of le extent than an Ocean, with which it may be directly connected, as the Mediterranean, the North-sea, etc. with the Atlantic, or having communication with a remoter body as the Black-sea and the Mediterranean; Inland seas also exist as the Caspian-sea. The portion of the earth covered with water is called the „ Sea ”. — It is likewise given to the great undulations or swell of the Ocean, when broken during a heavy gale or tempest; also to a single wave shipped by, or striking a ve el; it is said to be a BCro sea”, when waves are moving in irregular directions caused by opposing currents, wind against tide etc., a uHeavy-sea” when waves are running of extra height and force; a Short-sea ”, when the waves are short and irregular.
