anasarca

[In Fr. anasarque; Port. anasarca; Gr. ἀvá ( and ) = up, and σάρξ ( sarx ), gen it. σαρκός ( sarkos ) = flesh.] It Med.: A disease characterised by a dropsical effusion of serum into the cellular ti ue. may be acute or chronic, local or general. The dropsical effusion which often appears in children after scarlatina, and that which after heart disease in old age creeps up from the lower limbs till it terminates life, with other dropsical effusions, are all ranked under anasarca. Anasarca may either generally or locally attend upon organic disease of any part of the body. that dropsical effusion which is commonly called Anasarca."-Todd & Bowman: Phys.
