A cereal belonging to the order Graminece; the most common variety, Hordeum distich on, is much used as a food, and also in the preparation of malt. B. Decoct. (B. P.). Dose B. Pearl, is the decorticated grain, rounded and polished. B. Water, decoctum horde i, a decoction consisting of two ozs. of Pearl B. boiled in one and one-half pints of water and afterward strained. See Ptisan . B. Sugar, saccharum hordeatum; practically a glucose. Applied also to an amorphous ma obtained by melting cane-sugar.
