He intended to study law but at the outbreak of the Civil War entered the Union Army, serving throughout the conflict and receiving the rank of brevet brigadier general in 1866. Following the disbandment of the voluntesor army, he was commi ioned as second lieutenant in the regular army and was active in Indian campaigns. During the Spanish American war he was adjutant general of the army and in recognition of his services was made major general. He commanded in the Philippines, 1904-06, and was made a lieutenant general. He retired from the service in 1906. -
