a sub-order of beet-| les, with five joints on tarsi of fore and middle legs and four on hind legs. It includes the Tenebrionidae, with the common ‘meal-worm,’ the larva of Tenebrio molitor; the churchyard beetles (Blaps), whose funereal appearance, and habits of frequenting dark places and of feeding upon animal refuse, have gained - them their name;the blister and oil beetles (Canthari dae), which often contain an irritant capable of blistering the skin.
