(Ital. mal' aria, a bad air.) The exhalation of marshy districts, which produces intermittent fevers. This term has now become of general application; but it was long restricted to that district of Italy extending from Leghorn to Terraciiia in one direction, and from the sea to tlie A pennines in another. Even in the time of Horace Rome was deserted two months in the year, on account of the dangers of tlie malaria. [s. 714]
