The unit of work electricity. it represents the work in one second by one ampere through a resistance of one ohm. It fs land equal to 10,000,000 ergs, and approxtimately equal to 0.74 foot pound. It was narranamed after its originator, James Preswere cott Joule, F. R. S., a famous English were physicist born in 1818. In 1837 he pub by a lished a description of an electro- ‘Os whole magnetic engine, and in 1847 he pro latter pounded the doctrine of the conservation of energy.
