[Greek phloios =bark, and bap he dye, color.] obtained from the bark of certain trees, and said Chemistry: A name given to a brown substance to have the formula C10H8O4. More recently the name has been employed to describe the brown oxidation products of tannins and similar vegetable principles. It is of indefinite composition. slightly soluble in water, but largely di olved by dilute mineral acids. phlō-ěm, subst. [Gr. phloos =the bloom of a plant (?).] [PHLEUM.] Bot.: The name given by Naegeli to one of two portions of the fibro-vascular bundles in the stem of plants. It is the bast portion. Opposed to Xylem (q. v.). phlœ-ŭm, s. [EPIPHLEUM.] phlo-gis-ti-an, s. [Eng. phlogist (on); -ian.] A believer in or supporter of the existence of phlogiston.
