POPE
Dictionary of Science, Literature and Art · 1842 · p. 36
A title derived from an oriental word signifying father, and in earlier times applied indiscriminately to all bishops, and in the East even to ministers; but for many centuries the term has been confined to the bishop of Home, who is also designated by Roman Catholics as the Holv Father. See Papacy. [s. 974]
