Bennett, and afterwards under Thalberg and Molique; conductor of Torquay choral soc. 1855–9; settled at Reading 1859, where he founded the Layston college of music, which had 200 pupils; composer of The seventh seal, a sacred drama 1853; The battle, a dramatic solo and chorus 1854; Herne, a legend of royal Windsor, an opera in 3 acts, libretto by E. Oxenford 1879, performed at Reading; his name is attached to upwards of 40 pieces of music 1849–79; he also contributed e ays to The Monthly musical record. d. Reading 4 Feb. 1892.
