emba ies reached Rome, under August us, about 20 B.C, and many Roman coins are found in India (Royal Asiatic Socy. Journal, July 1886, p. 397). The chain of communication was complete in the Ist century A.c., and had evidently been so since the 4th and 5th centuries B.c. [August us also, in the famous Angora bilingual text (see W. J. Hamilton’s Researches in Asia Minor, 1842, No. 102), speaks of emba ies sent to him by “ Kings of India,” such as “had never before been seen by Romans.”—Ep.] We go back at least to the time when Kalanos (or ‘Kali-nat) visited Alexander the Great in Persia at Perse polis, and he was apparently not the first Buddhist mi ionary to the west (see Pythagoras).
