Elgin

(el'gin,) a city of Scotland, C. of co. of Elgin or Moray, on the Lo ie, 120 m. N.W. of Edinburgh. Pop. 8,897. Elgin, in Canada West, a W. co., on the N. shore of Lake Erie; area, abt. 700 sq. m.; C. St. Thomas. Pop. 36,345.- In Illinois, a manufacturing town of Kane co., on Fox river, 42 m. N.W. of Chicago. It is especially noted for its watch manufactures. Pop. 5,441. Elgin and Kincardine, (kin-kārd'in,) THOMAS BRUCE, 7th EARL OF, descended from the royal Scottish house of Bruce, was B. in Scotland, 1777. During a diplomatic career at Constantinople and Athens, he secured to the British nation those pricele remains of cla ic art which have since become known to the world as the Elgin Marbles. D. 1841. His son, JAMES, Sth Earl, became succe ively Gov.-Gen.of Canada, negotiator of the treaty of Tientsin with China, and Viceroy of India. D. 1863. [s. 325]
