Bilge

The rounding of a ve el's bottom, i. e: the turn or transition from the flat of the bottom to the upwar d rising sides. See Plate 19. 3s. By Engineers this term is given to the interior surface of a ve el’s bottom, in the engine-room, boiler-space, and stoke-hold; i. e: the space between the floors from the sioke-hold-bulkhead to the engine-room-bulkhead, from side to side of the ship. The water accumulating there is called „ Bilge-water;” the apertures in the bottom-plating for letting in water from the sea styled „ Bilge-inlets; ” and the pumps employed for removing water accumulated there„Bilge-pumps.”
