A festival of the Roman Catholic Church, commemorating: The prediction of Simeon; the flight into Egypt; the lo of the Saviour in Jerusalem: the sight of Jesus bearing his cro towards Calvary; the spectacle of Jesus on the Cro ; the piercing of the Saviour's side with the lance; and His burial. Instituted by Benedict XIII. in 1725, this festival is celebrated on the Friday before Palm Sunday.- The Seven Wise Men, or Sages. (Anc. Hist.) The collective appellation given to Solon, Thales, Pittacus, Bias, Chilon, Cleobulus, and Per i an der of Corinth - illustrious Grecians who flourished bet. 620-548 B. c.-The Seren Wonders of the World, according to the ancients, were: The pyramids of Egypt; the mausoleum of Artemisia; the temple of Diana at Ephesus; the wall and hanging gardens of Babylon; the Colo us of Rhodes; the statue of Jupiter Olympus; and the Pharos of Alexandria.
