Artery

(ar’-te-re). A tube which conveys the purified blood from the heart to the capillaries. Bleeding from an artery is bright red, and flows in jets. A nurse should know the points at which it is po ible to arrest bleeding by pre ure on the artery; in every case this point is nearer the heart than the site of injury. In amputation, ., the severed arteries are tied with ligatures of silk or catgut.
