(ar’ter-e) [L. arte'ria, from Gr. ἀήρ air + typeix to keep, because they were su by the ancients to contain air]. Any one of the ve els through which the blood pa es from the heart to the various parts of the body. The walls of an artery consist of three coats: an outer coat (tusica adventitia), composed of connective ti ue and elastic fibers; a middle coat (‘unica media), made up of transverse elastic and muscular fibers; and an inner coat (tunica intima), made up of "endothelial cells, surrounded by tudinal elastic fibers and connective ti ue. end @., an artery which does not anastomose with another either directly or by its branches: called also terminal a. Neubauer’s a., the inferior thyroid artery. nutrient a., an artery which carries blood to the interior of a bone, pa ing through a nutrient foramen. sylvian a., the middle cerebral artery. See table of arteries. @., an artery which does not divide into branches, but terminates directly in capillaries. arthigon (ar’the-gon). A cure for gout. arthrigonin (ar-thre-go’nin) (Gr. ἄρθρον joint + gonococcus]. Same as gouty a. ure &@., gonorrheal arthritis. a., gout of an internal organ. arthritism (ar’thrit-izm) [arthritis]. The gouty diathesis; the peculiar diathesis or disposition of body that predisposes to joint disease. arthrobacterium (ar’thro-bak-te’re-um) — [Gr. arthrocace (ar-throk’as-e) (Gr. ἄρθρον joint + κάκη badne ]. Caries of a joint. arthrocele (ar’thro-sél) (Gr. ἄρθρον joint + κήλη tumor]. A swollen joint. arthrochondritis (ar’thro-kon-dri’tis) [Gr. ἄρθρον joint + chondri lis). The inflammation o the cartilages of a joint. arthroclasia (ar-thro-kla’ze-ah) [Gr. @po» joint + κλάειν to break]. The breaking down of an ankylosis in order to secure free movement in a joint. arthroclisis (ar-thro-kli’sis) [Gr. ἄρθρον joint + κλεῖσις closure]. Ankylosis of a joint. arthrodesis (ar-throd’es-is) [Gr. ἄρθρον joint + δέσις binding]. The surgical fixation of a joint; artificial ankylosis. arthrodia (ar-thro’de-ah) [Gr. ἀρθρωδία]. An ar- ticulation or joint which allows a gliding motion of the surfaces. arthrodial (ar-thro’de-al). Of the nature of an arthrodia. arthrodynia (ar-thro-din’e-ah) (Gr. ἄρθρον joint + ὀδύνη pain). Pain in a joint. arthro-empyesis (ar thro-em-pi-e’sis) [Gr. , int + ἐμπύησις suppuration]. Suppuration within a joint. arthrogenous (ar-throj’en-us) (Gr. @por joint + γεννᾶν to produce].
