Myelin

(mi'-el-in), A name given by Thudichum to a substance obtained from the white matter of the brain. It occurs usually as a white, amorphous, ivory-like ma , but crystallizes from an ethereal or alcoholic solution. In a wider sense, any member of the myelin group may be called a myelin. Upomyelin, Paromyelin, Amido-mye-lin, and Sphingo-mvelin differ from myelin mainly in containing one or more additional nitrogenous radicles. The "white substance of Schwann" and the ordinary brain-juice are also called myelin. See Organotherapy .
