Consists of a hollow cylinder containing a wheel, having several curved fan like rays projecting from its centre-spindle, on which (by steam-power applied) it is made to rotate very rapidly, giving to water, lifted by its action, an upward spiral motion of high velocity, till it reaches a larger enclosed space above, in which it still gyrates till discharged with considerable force through an aperture. These machines are used as circulating-pumps and for other purposes. See Plate 63 G.
