Indium

(in'denт.) (Chem.) A rare metallic element discovered in 1863 by Reich and Richter by means of spectrum analysis in some zinc ores. Its spectrum exhibits two indigo-colored lines in the more refrangible part of the spectrum. It is a very soft lead-colored metal, easily beaten out into leaves,and tolerably permanent in the air; it much resembles lead in its physical properties. [s. 482]
