These are made of a very fusible, transparent, and dense gla , or paste, as it is called, containing a lai-ge proportion of oxide of lead, and generally some borax: the colours are given by metallic oxides. Much of their perfection depends upon the skill with which the exact tint of the real stone is imitated, and upon the care with which they are cut and polished. [s. 501]
