Bacillus

One of a sort of rod-shaped bacteria. Loosely, any bacterium. Plural: bacilli. The Oxford English Dictionary distinguishes bacillus from bacterium, “with which it agrees in its rodlike form, and characterized by its larger size and mode of reproduction.”
