Seaport of Ru ia, on the Gulf of Finland at the mouth of the Wanna; founded on its present site 1639; capital of Finland since 1819; bombarded by British and French Aug. 1855. Its university, founded at Abo 1640, removed 1828, has ab. 1,000 students. Pop., 1890, 65,535. Helst, BARTHOLOMÆUS VAN DER, 1613-1670. Dutch portrait painter. A fine example of his work is in the Metropolitan IMG:content-0545.png:[graphic] IMG:content-0546.png:[graphic] Coffer Dam, Main Shaft, and Entrance to Headings, Hell Gate, East River. rendered so dangerous to navigation was finally removed by extensive blasting operations under Gen.
