Seaport of Ru ia, on the Gulf of Finland at the mouth of the Wanna; founded on its present site 1639; capital of Finland since 1819; bombarded by British and French Aug. 1855. Its university, founded at Abo 1640, removed 1828, has ab. 1,000 students. Pop., 1890, 65,535. Helst, BARTHOLOMÆUS VAN DER, 1613-1670. Dutch portrait painter. A fine example of his work is in the Metropolitan IMG:content-0545.png:[graphic] IMG:content-0546.png:[graphic] Coffer Dam, Main Shaft, and Entrance to Headings, Hell Gate, East River. rendered so dangerous to navigation was finally removed by extensive blasting operations under Gen. Newton 1885. The explosives used weighed ab. 221 tons. See BLASTING.
