BURGUNDY

(called also Burgundy Proper Zfower Burgundy), formerly a province in the E. France, lying on the w. of Franche-Comtd, and the s. of Cluunpagne. It was divided into the duchy of Burgundy and four counties. It now forms four departments of Yonne, Cote-d'Or, Sadne-et-Loire, and Ain, containing, according to thB preliminary retunis of the census of 1872, 1,699,752 inhabitants. It is watered by a number of navigable rivers. Central Canal joins the Loire with the Sa6ne {Canal du Centre, 72 miles long), and another (217 miles long) joins the Rh6ne with the Rhine. Burgundy one of the most productive provinces in France. plains are rich in arable land, the sides of the are covered with vineyards and fruit-trees, while summits aboimd in pastures, wood, and game. principal product is wine.
