albuminoid

(al-bu’min-oid) [albumin + Gr. εἶδος form]. 1. Resembling albumin. 2. Same as protein. 3. Any member of a numerous group of proteins resembling albumin in their constitution. They are amorphous, soluble in water, and nearly insoluble in alcohol; they form the chief constituents of blood, glands, muscles, nerves, etc. They include keratin, elastin, collagen, and reticulin.
