Pyrocatechin

(pi-ro-kat-e' -chin), Catechol; a substance first obtained in the distillation of catechin (the juice of Mimosa catechu). It is formed by the dry distillation of proto-catechuic acid. It crystallizes in shor" rhombic prisms and sublimes in shining leaflets; i-, soluble in water, alcohol, and ether; melts at 104 C. and boils at 2450 C. Its alkaline solutions tun black on exposure to air. It is an antipyretic.
