[NL., [NL., παλαιός, ancient, + καρίς, a small crustacean.] A genus of fo il crustaceans founded by Meek and Worthen in 1865 upon P. typus, a synthetic form, of Carboniferous age, from the North American coal-measures, subsequently giving name to an extensive group of crustaceans, the Palæocarida, which it represents. I. a. Of or pertaining to the Palæocrinoidea. II. n. A member of the Palæocrinoidea . Palæocrinoidea (pālē -ō-kri-noi'dē-ä), n. pl . [NL., Palæocrina + -oidea .] A suborder or superfamily of Crinoidea , represented by such genera as Actinocrinus , Cyathocrinus , and Platy crinus, and containing all the earlier extinct crinoids; encrinites, or fo il crinoids.
