PAL

(An American name applied to clear gums?) This substance is often improperly called gum copal. It is a peculiar resin, very ditiicultly soluble in alcohol; hard, brittle, and inodorous: its specific gravity varies from 1-04 to 1'13. It is the produce of the Rhus copal linum and of the Elccocarpus cop a lifer us of the East Indies: a third kind of copal is also brought from the Coast of Guinea. It is used in varnishes. [s. 292]
