Attwood

GEORGE, (utt'wood,) an English mathematician, B. 1745, was fellow and tutor of Trinity College, Cambridge. His best work, Treatise on the Rectilinear Motion and Rotation of Bodies, contains the first description of the Attwood's Machine, since used in demonstration of the laws of uniformly accelerated motion, and consisting of a pulley, the pivots of which rest on wheels to diminish friction in rotation.
