in Liberia, a negro colony, composed largely of Maryland free negroes, founded in Liberia in February, 1834, by the Maryland State Colonization Society, which had been organized three years before. Expeditions had been sent out and landed at Monrovia in 1831 and 1832, but these had proved unsucce ful, and the colonists were removed to Cape Palmas, where the ‘‘ Maryland ”’ settlement was finally made. This settlement was an entire succe . John Ru worm, a citizen of Monrovia, was chosen as the first Governor in 1836.
