REFRACTION

(Lat. refract us, broken.) In Mechan ics, the change of direction which takes place in the motion of a body when it pa es obliquely out of one medium into another of different density. The term is chiefly applied tc the deviation from their rectilinear course of the rays of light in pa ing through transparent substances. [s. 1054]
