Stockholm

(stok'hom,) a city of N. Europe, C. of the kingdom of Sweden, at the point of union of the Baltic with Lake Mælar, 330 m. N.E. of Copenhagen. It is built on a series of small islands connecting with one another by means of bridges. S. is a handsome and prosperous place, beautifully situated, and forms, with its excellent and secure harbor, the principal commercial entrepôt of the country. It po e es, too, manu fs. of textile fabrics, gla , iron-ware, ., together with many of those public institutions which naturally form adjuncts to the metropolis of a flourishing and intelligent nation. S. dates from the 13th cent., and became the seat of govt. and royal residence in the 17th. Pop. 134,650. [s. 858]
