CONSCIOUSNESS

The state of being able to take cognizance of impre ions (from within the organism or from the surroundings) capable of giving rise to bodily, intellectual, or emotional sensations. Double c. Fr., conscience double. The state of a person (a somnambulist, a hypnotic, or the like) who leads two alternating courses of life, one during his ordinary condition, and the other when in a state of somnambulism, etc., having no remembrance of the real or supposed events of the one while in the other.
