Arrest

Taking a thing or a person into legal custody. It is applied to the seizure of property in admiralty. The arrest of a person may take place in civil suits, chiefly those for torts, such as a ault and battery, or frauds upon creditors; or in a criminal proceeding. Criminal arrests may be made by an officer, or by a private person, and with or without a warrant. In the latter case it must be shown that a felony had been committed; in either, that reasonable grounds existed for suspecting the person arrested.
