a seaport, West Africa, capital of the British West African colony of Sierra Leone, near the mouth of the estuary er river of Sierra Leone, in the vicinity of extensive swamps. Its principal streets are broad and straight and have a very attractive appearance. Among the public buildings are several churches, a governor’s house, and barracks. It has a good harbour, and is a coaling station. Pop. (1931), 55,359.
