MEAD

(Dutch, meede.) A vinous liquor made by di olving one part of honey in three of boiling water, flavouring it with spices, and adding a portion of ground malt and a piece of toast dipped in yeast, and suffering the whole to ferment. The Scand in avian mead is flavoured with primrose blo oms. Mead formed the ancient, and for centuries the favourite beverage, of the northern nations. It is frequently mentioned in O ian, [s. 736]
