(Fr. chef, head.) In Heraldry, the upper part of the escutcheon, divided into three points, dexter, middle, and sinister. A chief, as an ordinary, is a le removed to the upper part of the escutcheon. Charges, in the situation of the chief, are described as "in chief." Cin' [s. 238]
