Cayenne

French Guiana, South America; settled by the French, 1604-35. It afterwards came succe ively into the hands of the English (1654), French, and Dutch. The last were expelled by the French in 1677. Cayenne was taken by the British, January 12, 1809, but was restored to the French in 1814.
