1. A period of rhythmic silence, the tempo continuing to be counted pa ively. 2. A symbol indicating such rest. The rests are usually named according to the portion of a measure they occupy, as 16th rest; sometimes being called after the note which has the same duration, as quarter-note rest, breve rest. They may be augmented by dots and may extend beyond the limits of one measure, as the four-measure rest. See SIGNS ANP SYMBOLS. large-rest, long-rest. See p. 767.
