The art and science of healing and curing disThe early history is legendary. According to Homer, Esculapius appears as an excellent physician of human origin, and becomes the god of the healing art. The knowledge of medicine from then to near the 19th century remained almost purely hypothetic and empiric. It is only within the last century, especially the last quarter, of scientific research, that medicine has approached an exact science and true art. The study of medicine includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, bacteriology, hygiene, chemistry, materia medic a, therapeutics, surgery and obstetrics.
