(fam'e-le.) [L. familia.] (Bot.) Synonymous with ORDER, q. v.- (Zool.) A tribe of animals or vegetables allied to each other by certain distinctive characters. (Math.) A congeries of several kinds of curves, all of which are defined by the same equation, but in a different manner, according to their respective orders. [s. 355]
