(Lat.), n. m. 'tez(tas). Gen., asci'tæ; ace., asci/ten. Gr., doxirns Peat eon erro) tne bag-like dropsy (from aoxés, a pouch or bottle). … ascite, hydropisie du bas ventre (ou du péritoine), hydropéritoine [Piorry]. Ger., Bauchwa ersucht. It., ascite. Sp., ascitis. Syn.: hydro peritoneum, hydrops eritonæi (seu abdominis). Dropsy of the per it onæum (or of the liy), abdominal dro}; à col leet i on of serous fluid in the peritoneal cavity, especially one not due to inflammation of the peritoneum. It is a symptom of various diseases, especially of the heart, liver, and kidneys, or may be due to local causes, such as degeneration of the ie or obstruction of the portai circulation. The sp. gr. of the liquid varies from 1008 to 1°014, and it occasionally contains fibrin, cho i ester in, biliary elements, etc., and, in cases of renal origin, urea.
