FLANK

(Fr. flanc.) In Architecture, the side of any building. Flank, in Fortification, is that part of the bastion which from the curtain to the face; the flank of one bastion serves to defend the ditch before the curtain and face of the opposite bastion. See Fortification. [s. 473]
